Poole Maritime Festival officially starts on Monday 4th June 2018 with the inspiring STEM event in partnership with Young Enterprise. For those of you who are wondering what STEM means it stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics! This year around 100 students from local Poole schools will come together for the one day event at Poole Harbour Commissioners, bringing together school children, teachers and businesses from across Poole for a marathon challenge to solve a maritime-related dilemma and present their solution or prototype to a panel of business leaders and representatives.
The challenge, which is set by Young Enterprise and Economic Development at the Borough of Poole, will be based around reducing plastics in the seas and oceans. Business mentors will be on hand to help the students and local MP’s will also be in attendance to add context and speak to the students. There will be a worksheet to tackle, and students will be tasked with devising ideas of how to reduce plastics in the seas/oceans followed by creating a campaign. The students will then present their designs to their peers and the panel of experts from companies such as Lush.
Sue Waters from Young Enterprise said ‘Dorset Young Enterprise is delighted to be heading up STEM challenge for this year’s Maritime Festival. It is great that so many local business people are volunteering to help support the young people through this STEM experience day and maybe encouraging the young people to think about pursuing a STEM careers in the future’
