Poole Maritime Festival 2022 builds skills with a STEM challenge for young people

Poole Maritime Festival continues on Thursday 30th June 2022 with the inspiring STEM event in partnership Maritime UK Careers. For those of you who are wondering what STEM means it stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics! This year around 100 students from local BCP schools will come together for the one day event at Poole Harbour Commissioners, bringing together school children, apprentices, teachers and businesses from across the connurbation for a marathon challenge to solve a maritime-related dilemma and present their solution or prototype to a panel of business leaders and representatives.

The challenge, which is set by SPEED and Economic Development at BCP Council, will be based around sustainable marine propulsion, understanding and quantifying biofouling. Business mentors and marine apprentices will be on hand to help the students and local Councillors and Harbour Commissioners will also be in attendance to add context and speak to the students. Following practical activities, teams will be challenged to devise a sustainable propulsion method. The students will then present their solutions to their peers and the panel of experts from Connected Places Catapult, Careers and Enterprsie Company and the Mayor of Poole.

‘It is great that so many local business people are volunteering to help support the young people through this STEM experience day and maybe encouraging the young people to think about  pursuing a STEM careers in the future’
